TRAMS ON THE WAY

TRAMS ON THE WAY

Arriving in 2011, Edinburgh rams will provide a world class transport system which will link Edinburgh Airport in the west of the city with Newhaven in the north, via the city centre and Leith. Costing £545m and featuring 22 stops ver 18km the trams will offer a comfortable and affordable mode of transportation for Scotland’s iconic Capital. Connecting with Edinburgh Airport, the trams will provide an interchange for passengers arriving anddeparting by air with local public transport. Trams, together with the Airlink bus, will provide air passengers with a first rate option for travelling to and from the city centre. Frequency of services, coupled with the capacity for 250 people per vehicle, mean the trams will be able to cater for large volumes of users arriving or departing from the Airport. A new rail station at Gogar will also allow the trams greater connectivity with the rail services from other parts of Scotland, as well as provide a rail link to the airport via the tram. This station will provide an opportunity for passengers from Fife and further north to access the airport with a single interchange.

Edinburgh recently celebrated its ‘topping out’ in a ceremony with construction partner Balfour Beatty and Scottish Secretary, Jim Murphy MP. The ‘topping out’ ceremony marks an important milestone in the future development of Edinburgh Airport, as the airport celebrates the latest phase of a £40 million departure lounge project. The 5,000 square metre development will include a major expansion of the airport’s departure lounge, offering more space for passengers to relax, and a wider choice of shops, bars and restaurants. The project will also include a new purpose-built security search area. ‘Our capital city is an increasinglyattractive destination for business visitors and tourists alike, but it also serves as a key gateway to the rest of Scotland,’ said Jim Murphy MP. ‘This expansion will therefore deliver a vital economic boost to the whole country.’ There are less than four months until the first phase of the new look departure lounge opens.

SIGN UP TO FAIR TRADE

The Scottish Fair Trade Forum is the only Fair Trade organisation working in every region of Scotland. We work with local and national government, universities and schools, community and faith groups and others, supporting and driving Fair Trade activity as we lead Scotland’s campaign to become one of the world’s first Fair Trade Nations.

Anyone can become a member of the Scottish Fair Trade Forum and our members come from a range of sectors and regions. This is reflected in our mission to embed the values of Fair Trade in all levels of Scottish society, where the dignity and rights of producers is recognised through a commitment to fairness in international trading.

Fair Trade is a partnership between consumers like us and producers of products in developing countries. Fair Trade gives people in some of the poorest countries in the world the tools to work their way out of poverty. It guarantees a fair minimum price, longterm contracts so producers can plan for the future and a social premium that is often reinvested in community infrastructure. By buying Fairtrade and fairly traded products, you are helping someone you may never even meet to earn a fair wage for their work. Find out what it means to be a Fair Trade Nation and how you can get involved by visiting www.sftf.org.uk.
